Basic and applied research projects at HRC involve estimation and prediction on hourly to decadal time scales using numerical models and uncertainty analysis of hydrologic variables such as precipitation, soil moisture, channel flow, and river discharge. Diagnostic studies provide information about hydrologic variables that form the basis for data collection, dissemination, flood warning, and water resources management systems designed and implemented by HRC. For this introduction, research at HRC is divided into four main categories below, although in practice, research activities are not so easily categorized:
