HRC staff members Dr. Zhengyang Cheng, Dr. Konstantine Georgakakos, Cristopher Spencer and Randall Banks published a research paper on flash flood assessment and operational prediction in urban areas in the journal WATER on 13 August 2022.

The paper demonstrates the research-to-application and operational use of numerical hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to (a) quantify potential flash flood risks in small urban communities with high spatial resolution; (b) assess the effectiveness of possible flood mitigation measures appropriate for such communities; and (c) construct an effective operational urban flash flood warning system.  The paper highlights HRC projects in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Istanbul, Turkey.
